The following are some of the top ways you can reduce your
energy costs:
- Use LED lights for your holiday light strings
- Close fireplace damper when not in use
- Open south facing blinds/drapes in winter and close in summer
- Close shades at night and windows not facing south(in Winter)
- Service your heating and cooling system
- Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle
- Replace your old appliances with Energy Star products
- Replace your furnace filter
- If you never use your fireplace, plug and seal the chimney flue
- Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the warm
setting (120°F)
- Close attached garage door when not in use
- Use Slow cookers which can be as much at 75% more efficient
than the stove and oven.
- Use Ceiling fans (clockwise in Winter and counter-clockwise in
Summer)
- Take short showers instead of baths
- Get a laptop computer instead of desktop(laptop uses 1/5 power)
- Get an inkjet Printer instead of laser(inkjets use 1/3 power)
- Get a LCD Flat Screen TV instead of Plasma(LCD's use 2/3 power)
- Turn down heat or A/C and close vents in rooms not in use
- Turn off power strip for computer/monitor and unplug electrical
items when not in use
- Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes and dry on medium or
low heat
- Wash clothes in cold water and use cold water detergent
- Keep lids on pots to cook food quicker and save on energy
- Clean lint screen on Dryer
- Use your oven in the Winter and grill outdoors in Summer
- Don't open oven during cooking or you will lose 25 degrees in heat
- Put insulation blanket around hot water heater
- Keep your refrigerator set at 38 Degrees
- Drain a bucket of water out of the hot water heater once a year to
remove sediment
